The Young Reporter (together with the HKBU Chinese-language newspaper San Po Yan)  is the oldest student newspaper in Hong Kong, registered with the Hong Kong government since 1969. TYR is entirely run by students of the International Journalism concentration in the Journalism Department under the School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University.

The TYR Stylebook was first produced by Tim Hamlett in 1992 and has been regularly updated over the years. The cover image here is from the 2004 edition. This is the first online edition, revised and updated by Robin Ewing, CK Lau and Jenny Lam.

In this supplementary guide, we have dropped many of the old Hong Kong words from the first edition such as “walla-walla” for water taxi, “godown” for warehouse and “Taipan” for boss of a hong. These words, though no longer in use, give interesting insight into the use of the English language when TYR was first produced. You can read the originial TYR Stylebook here.

This online guide is designed to help staff reporters and editors for TYR meet the technical and media needs of the 21st century.
